According to Professor Gerard Hodgkinson of Leeds University Business School in the UK, our intuition is our brain drawing upon on past experiences and external cues to make decisions.
I must agree with this. I teach my students: “Intuition uses what you know.”
This happens in degrees of milliseconds at a non-conscious level.
According to the professor, all we are aware of is a general “feeling” that something is right… Or wrong.
Prof. Hodgkinson also suggests that our intuition tends to get triggered naturally under three distinct scenarios:
- Under severe time pressure (which explains why many people get bursts of creativity and inspiration as a deadline looms)
- Situation of information overload (which explains why many top CEOs who make hundreds of decisions a day tend to rely on their “gut” than just pouring through a ton of data)
- In the face of acute danger.
