When I was in my late teens, I moved in with my best friend (who I met in college) and his family. Mario’s Mom, Mama Rosa was a loving woman who welcomed everyone. In typical Dominican style, she always had enough food for an army cooking on the stove and neighbors would come and go, making themselves plates of food to take with them.
The Melian’s lived in a large apartment in Washington Heights, the part of Manhattan where many Dominican’s live. The Dominican Republic is very close to Haiti, where the Vodou religion is alive and well. And, yes, there was magic in this place that became my home.
I picked up many of the Santeria rituals that were honored by his family. My affinity for earth based religions allow me to experience them and embrace what resonates with me. I would not call myself a “Santero”, but I do honor many West African customs.
Setting Lights is ritual I picked up from the Melian’s that stuck. (Actually, that is a hoo-doo term, meaning “conjure-work by candle-light”).
Candles can be carved, anointed with oils, herbs and glitter to bring about, call in or repel your intentions.
My “candle magick”, often includes crystal grids and tarot cards that support my intentions…Read: There is no “one way” to do it.
What I love about this type of magick is that it partners with the element of fire, and can include the spirit of herbs. It is a “hands-on”, and sometimes get a little dirty type of magick, which I love.
I believe whatever rituals you embrace should honor your natural “magickal gift order” – which happens to coincide with your “Manifesting style”. Discover yours here.
The color of the candle supports your intention.
Here is a basic candle color reference:
Red: love, sexuality, affection, passion, reunion, vigor
Orange: creativity, change, opening the way
Yellow: success, money, attraction, joy
Green: health, abundance, money
Blue: peace, harmony, spirituality
Purple: mastery, command, ambition, control
Pink: attraction, romance, friendship
Brown: material success, court cases, animals, lost items
White: Can be used for everything, spiritual blessings, purity
Some people just light the “right” color candle, place a letter of intention under it & call it a day. This works well for people with roommates or partners who are not into “woo”.
No need to get down & dirty like I do….This easy-peasy candle way is often just as effective as the down & dirty way.
