A long time ago, I attended a conference where the host asked: “If you could have one wish, what would it be?”
When it comes to making wishes, many people have no idea what they want.
Most of us wanted to be at a tropical beach with an umbrella cocktail in our hands at the conference. Nothing is wrong with this wish, but I realized something that day. We are all SO busy chasing after the “American Dream” (Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness) – that we get hung up on one word in this phrase: Pursuit. We are always “chasing” something or playing “catch-up.”
The chase itself can be so tiring that we forget what we want and never ask ourselves why we want it.
Knowing what you want helps you make small but powerful daily choices that support the baby steps toward your dreams and wishes.
And knowing the desire behind your desire is KEY.
To discover this, keep asking the ultimate question: WHY?
Let’s use this example:
Your wish to be debt-free.
Why?
To improve your credit score.
Why?
To buy a house.
Why?
To own your own space.
Why?
To create a sanctuary.
Why?
To have more peace in your life.
You may only need to ask “why?” once or twice to get to the bottom of your desire. But it is essential to know what your ultimate desire is, so you know it when it arrives.
Often, we have mistaken our “how” for our “why,” so knowing you’re why can free you of unnecessary work.
This reminds me of the joke where a man of faith is trapped on his roof, clinging to his bible due to a flood. Neighbors come by on a boat to help, but he waves his bible and tells them, “God will save me!“
Rescuers come by in a helicopter, and he clings his bible and screams up at them, “Keep going – God will save me.”
When he dies, he asks God why he didn’t save him, and God’s reply was, “What do you mean?? I sent you a boat and a helicopter!”
In this scenario, if the goal was to live, he would have taken the boat or helicopter, but it appears maybe his real goal was to meet God.
