Part of me celebrating NO-vember is literally saying “No.”
I announced to my family that this was going to be a low-key Christmas. I refuse to get caught up in the cycle of over-buying and debt associated with the holidays.
I don’t feel like putting time, energy, or effort into coordinating when my kids can be dragged into buying a tree that I alone decorate and takedown.
I don’t feel like searching from store-to-store looking for gifts that – truth be told – I don’t feel like giving. My kids aren’t 7; they are 27 and 17. They know there is no “Santa” – there is me, carrying this weight, which for whatever reason feels more like a burden, and I just don’t feel like it.
“Giving” should come from the heart. If I am giving reluctantly, why give at all? I have nothing to prove. I’ve been “giving” my entire life.
Instead, my daughter will get a fabulous house-warming gift when she and her wife move in 2022. And the money I usually spend on my son will not go towards ridiculously priced sneakers but towards buying his first car instead. This year, we’ll do a “Secret Santa” with a cap of $50, enjoy a delicious meal, and watch movies in our pajamas together (knowing my son, he’ll probably take to the streets, though!)
So – while I refuse to get caught up in the cycle of over-buying and the debt that is typically associated with the holidays, I will treat myself to saying “No.”
And I will also treat YOU.
