To my surprise, after opening Curio Craft & Conjure, I discovered many people think they are one in the same. Both include earth based traditions, ancient worship, and elements of European religions.
However, the difference between Hoodoo and Voodoo is significant.
Voodoo is an actual religion, while Hoodoo is considered “folk magic”.
Personally, I love hoodoo because it combines beliefs brought to the Americas by all those who migrated here, (along with some beliefs of those who were already here).
Much like our DNA, Hoodoo is a beautiful combination of numerous cultures…I like to think of it as “Melting-pot Magick”.
Some folks think it’s exclusively a “black thing” – but no – it’s not. (I can’t tell you how many knowledgeable white folks have come through our doors for their supplies.)
Another surprise for some are books we stock- like Hoodoo Bible Magic or The Book of Gold – which include Christian Conjure spells, sigils and prayers – using biblical psalms. Many can’t imagine what the bible has to do with magick – but Jesus & other bible “stars” are masterful magicians – just like we are. In fact, for many practitioners, the relationship magick has with Christianity offers comfort.
