While most folks celebrate the “new year” on New Year’s Eve, I celebrate my New Year on my birthday. And, if you know me, you may know that I celebrate my birthday for an entire month.
I do this for many reasons:
- It is my reminder that YES, DAMNIT, it IS ALL about ME! When you have created a life in the “service industry” and take care of others daily, I must remind myself periodically to put myself on top of my list.
- Relying on others to make your “day” special is a recipe for disaster. Relying on others to make you happy – PERIOD – is a recipe for disaster. Happiness is a choice. My choice. Your choice. Who better to choose what makes you happy at any given moment than you? If I don’t get it right one day, there are 29 others!
- As I enter this phase of my life, I realize that I want to experience “more.” Giving myself this month allows me to plan at least one unique and special experience in the coming year.
- As a survivor of the death of loved ones, breast cancer, and teens, I realize now more than ever that life is fleeting. I want to make the most of it – living it joyfully to my fullest expression. My “expressions” change with time and new information. I even celebrate that.
I also recognize the blessing of Covid: Everyone is “waking up.” They are quitting shitty jobs, taking up new interests, and exploring new and better ways of living and being.
