- Talk to Yourself
The voice inside your head is normal. It’s your inner-commentary that wants to make sense of the world. The first crucial here is to become an observer of your thoughts—to become self-aware, self-reflective. Think about your thinking.
There is more than one “you” inside of you. And often, we’re at odd with ourselves. “Self-mastery is about creating inner congruence—an agreement and peace between an external stimulus, our internal interpretation, and our emotional response.”
- Put it in your Peace Pipe
We’re the sum total of our experiences. And self-mastery recognizes we’re certainly not confined to them. Our experiences, (particularly the negative ones) have a way of seeping deep into our soul. A great man once said “Stains can’t be removed, yet we can choose not to wear those clothes again”.
Making peace with your past allows you an untarnished and more objective approach to the present, ideally resulting in a positive future.
- Invite Peer Play Time
Challenges to your thought patterns help with self-mastery. Playing devil’s advocate (and allowing others in your life to do so) will uncover weaknesses and holes in your thinking. Critical minds often results in better decision making. Have a spirited argument. You may be surprised at some of the insights revealed.
