Magick and Spirituality, contrary to popular belief – is not all “love and light.”
The truth is our “light” would not exist without our “dark”. We all have a dark side.
All of us – even the most “spiritual” have anger, bitterness, hate, and fear. To access this power, you have to go to those darker places in yourself.
Every tragedy we endure, illness or death, break-ups or job loss – all of it – makes us stronger – as long as we are able to make it out through the other side. In times like these, the dark night of our soul, the only way out is through.
People often avoid shadow work and the Dark Magick that comes with it – but I think this is a powerful journey and skill that any witch worth her weight should know.
We all have our inner dragons to slay and our own demons to confront. With practice and honesty, your dragons can become allies, and your demons can become your friends – not as bad or as scary as we have been lead to believe. How we use these dragons and demons is what really counts.
Many associate the dark moon as a moon phase when certain entities are honored and when Shadow Magick is performed.
The reality is simple: Our lives move through phases – just like the moon does. In our “waxing” phase, we grow and learn. In our “full” phase, we see our ideas take flight and plans reach fruition. And in our “waning” phase, we experience loss.
In terms of moon cycles – after the waning moon comes another phase during which many people choose not to perform magic: The Dark Moon. It lasts only three days, and it’s a time of darkness between the end of one thing and the beginning of another.
On calendars, it’s usually called the new moon when there is no visible moon in the sky. When we apply this metaphor to the larger picture of our lives – the dark moon represents the space between one thing and another.
The space between death and rebirth is one of life’s greatest mysteries. It holds both everything we fear and all we can wish for.
For example, when wildlife dies in the forest, they decompose, becoming fertilizer for the earth so new life can grow. Without death, new life couldn’t exist,.
This example demonstrates that while darkness and death mark an ending, they also contain the next beginning. The Dark Moon energy can be felt like a current moving through our existence and is the perfect time to do your shadow work – which is necessary to grow spiritually and live your fullest life. It helps you become wise, resilient, empathetic, and strong.
Shadow Ritual:
- Determine where you are: Grab your journal and take one issue you’re currently struggling with or what you are being called to heal – then begin connecting the dots.
- Link the emotions tied to your struggle: Write down every feeling and thought that comes to you. Write down the feelings behind the feelings. Release it all on paper – get it out of you.
- Make the connection between the emotions and beliefs you picked up early in life: Document the stories that lead to these beliefs being “birthed”. See that your younger self chose these beliefs and that your current, wiser self has other options.
- Create a new belief based on the new information that you have: In this part of your exercise, you get to choose new beliefs. You can even choose to heal your inner child by being the “parent” that you needed when the original idea was formed. As the parent, you remind your inner child of your perfection, beauty, lovability, and uniqueness.
